Meet Abner, our new family member!

Abner - Adopted 08/01/2007
Male Domestic Short-Hair
Est. Age on Arrival at Animal Ark: 7 years

Hi! My name is Abner. I am a friendly , obedient, quiet, easy going, orange tabby fellow. I ride well in cars and I use my scratching post. I am tolerant, but not playful, with other cats and dogs and I am good with children. I can be a vocal guy, so if you don't want a cat that talks with you, then I wouldn't be a good choice. I love affection and to rub against you.

History: I was surrendered by my family because they were moving and had too many cats
We adopted Abner on August 1st (our ninth wedding anniversary!)
He is very personable and, as the description states, he REALLY loves to rub up against you! I call it his violent affection because he practically head-butts you when you're holding him in your arms!
He is still getting used to the house, and he has yet to meet Vern (our lab mix). We aren't sure how he will react to my son's Guinea pig, either! Hopefully, he'll ignore her like our other cat did (who died on Sept. 1st).
It's so nice to have a cat around. He's very content to cuddle and to give "hugs" (he puts his paws up on your shoulders when you hold him).
The humane society said he is tolerant of dogs, so we're hoping they will get used to each other over time.
If you have any tips on how to introduce them properly, I'd love to hear them!

oh how fun, what a great anniversary present! About introducing good luck. When we took in a stray for a few weeks she was just introduced quickly to our dogs but then she was the friendly sort from the start. Our dogs usually adapt to other dogs well so we didn't think it would be a problem for them. How is Vern with other dogs/guinea pig, etc? If good/gentle then it shouldn't be a problem, just something new to adjust to. Best wishes!

Vern is curious and likes to sniff a lot, but over all she is quite gentle natured. They met through crates today, and now Vern is confined to the kitchen while Abner roams the house. I think tomorro will be the "big day".
We've been trying to give Vern extra snacks and attention since Abner came around so she doesn't feel neglected.

I'd rub Vern with catnip, and rub Abner with beef jerkey, get them excited and playful and then drop them both in your gated in kitchen and watch from a distance, laughing quietly so as not to distract them from the fun. But that's just me. Still want me to check in on your critters this weekend while you're gone? I'll be nice . . . I promise!

:) A

Sorry, no cat tips. I never had a cat. I've had dogs, but not right now. :(

Just thought I'd stop by and say hi. I noticed you were from WI.

crate introduction is a good start. I hope the face to face will be just as successful :-)

Excellent. Way to adopt an older cat. You are a good person.

I always, always feel sorry for older cats that need adopting. Our first cat was an older one, and he's awesome. Greatest ... cat ... ever.

I love cats.

Abner's luck has changed for the best to have a good home and caring people.

You are wonderful people to adopt homeless and abandoned pets instead of buying from pet stores.

Hope everyone will enjoy and love each other's company in your home.

Welcome to your new family member! I bet you have a post or two in your future about dog/cat interactions...

I have no tips about introducing Abner to Vern, but congratulations on the new family member!

I have a signal! It is sketchy (don't know how long it will hold) and not the one from the school, but it's a welcome sight (as is your blog).

May good times rain down on anyone who adopts a pet in need. Good on you!

I would suggest a double date. That way it's more informal, and there's less pressure.

A wonderful story and an adorable cat. How lucky you are, I can't have pets in my building, but I am happy Abner was "rescued". I hope your summer has been swell.

My apologies to all of you, I have not been a "good blogger" this summer! The summer is getting away on me and, like a runaway train, I can't seem to slow it down!
Ah, well. There are those precious moments of rest....I treasure those!

Thank you all for your well wishes with our new family member- he and the dog BOTH slept on the bed with little disruption for the first time 2 nights ago- a big step in the right direction!!
